She's around here somewhere...

Wednesday nights Mom and I babysit at church for the choir parents and the parents in small group Bible studies. I'm in the classroom with kids ages 2 - 4, among whom are two of my "nieces," Nivelle and Erin. Nivelle has a little admirer named Ian, who is also four. Last night they discovered that they like holding hands.

While the other children ran around in a frenzy, Ian took Nivelle by both hands, faced her, and gazed deeply into her eyes. He cocked his head to one side, smiling with a sheepish smile, and sighed deeply. Nivelle, in return gazed into his eyes and giggled. They stood there, staring at each other, amidst a rampaging herd of children. I thought I heard angels singing in the background (or maybe that was just my ears ringing).

Being the protective Auntie that I am, I walked over and laid a hand on Ian's shoulder.

"Young man, you need to ask Nivelle's daddy if you can hold her hands. You should only hold hands with a girl if you're planning to marry her."

Ian reluctantly let loose of Nivelle's hands and sighed. "Well, I know my wife is around here somewhere," Romeo squeaked in his four-year-old voice. I nearly snorted with laughter at his seriousness.

Nivelle went home from church and told her mom that she had met the boy she was going to marry...he was wearing an "Incredibles" t-shirt! How else would a 4-year old identify a future knight? Hilarious!

Oh my gosh. That is so sweet. Keep an eye on them, and if it dose work out for them in 15 or so years, tell them that story.

Do you think God has told him that his wife is in there somewhere? That would be cool, but a little much for most 4 year olds.

Hey, your lucky they both like each other! Usually one of them hates the other kid, and runs around screaming because the admirer is following him/her around, and then because one kid bolts away, the rest of the group is magnetically drawn to follow. Makes a big mess of childrens church.

Yeah, we've got those too. *laughs*

I forgot to mention another part of the story...

Later on, Ian slipped his hand into mine and asked, "Is this okay?" looking up at me with his large blue eyes.

"Yeah, that's fine," I laughed. "I'm way too old for you - theoretically, I'm old enough to be your mom."

"Oh good." Ian blinked at me and then scampered off to play.

Ah, so he catches on quick. Good learner.

It will be really funny if he acctually talks to Nivelle's father.

"You two are a little too young right now. Why don't you just try and be my daughter's friend for now. Okay?"
