Daughters

Proceeding each essay/post (mentioned in the previous post), I thought it would be fun to introduce a short story, poem, etc. that corresponds with the intended topic for discussion. So, in preparation for "I Need You to Love Me," let's discuss the song "Daughters" by John Mayer. Though Mayer (to my knowledge) is a secular artist, his song has some interesting points to discuss. Click here to listen to the song. Lyrics are below...

"Daughters" by John Mayer

I know a girl --
She puts the color inside of my world.
She's just like a maze
Where all the walls continually change;
And I've done all I can
To stand on her steps with my heart in my hands.
Now I'm starting to see
Maybe it's got nothing to do with me.

Fathers, be good to your daughters;
Daughters will love like you do.
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers,
So mothers be good to your daughters, too.

Oh, you see that skin?
It's the same she's been standing in,
Since the day she saw him walking away;
Now she's left
Cleaning up the mess he made.

Fathers, be good to your daughters;
Daughters will love like you do.
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers,
So mothers be good to your daughters, too.

Boys, you can break --
You'll find out how much they can take.
Boys will be strong,
And boys soldier on,
But boys would be gone without warmth from
A woman's good, good heart.

On behalf of every man
Looking out for every girl --
You are the god and the weight of her world.

So fathers, be good to your daughters;
Daughters will love like you do.
Girls become lovers who turn into mothers,
So mothers be good to your daughters, too. (3x)

Hmmm. I am trying to figure out whether I agree with this. I think I'm at yes and no right now. I do not doubt that my father loved me when I was growing up, but I don't think he ever really pursued a relationship with us when we were young. So much was superficial in the relationship. Things have improved over the years, but it is hard to put substance into a relationship that didn't have it for many years. My dad seemed much better able to express love and concern (in a genuine fatherly way, to be sure) for young ladies without a Christian father than he ever did for his own. What was modeled was love for family that is in many ways unexpressed or very poorly expressed, assumed that the others just know that it's there. I really thrive on verbal affirmation, so I needed to have it expressed and didn't hear it in any memorable way until much later. I am so glad things have changed, but the road was rough.

I don't agree with the words of this song, especially not with the words "You are the god and the weight of her world".

I am looking forward to Carey's wisdom in all this; I am certain you have far better and much more Godly things to say concerning this topic than Mr. Mayer!!
